Educating the Community in Safeguarding Homes Against Break & Enters
The Peterborough Lakefield Community Police Service and its Auxiliary Unit are excited to launch a new crime prevention initiative called Homegauard. The program is aimed at educating the community on making their homes less of a target for a break and enter. Specially trained members of the Auxiliary Unit will be conducting home security audits in areas where break and enters have been committed.
Auxiliary Officers will be working with the Crime Analyst Officer and members of the Criminal Investigation Unit. Auxiliary Officers will be directed to neighbourhoods where residential break and enters have been reported. The Auxiliary officers will canvass the residents in these neighbourhoods advising them of the recent break and enters and note any suspicious activity that the resident may have observed and provide an opportunity to conduct a home security audit
The security audits will evaluate such things as door hinges, frames, and locks, window locks and pins, exterior lighting, and garage security. Upon completion of the security audit, the homeowner will be given an information package containing a copy of the home audit report, as well as other crime prevention information and tips. The audit report will identify areas that require attention to increase security.
The Peterborough Lakefield Community Police Service Auxiliary Unit is made up of community members who volunteer their time with the police service. Auxiliary members have completed training and orientation sessions in a variety of areas relating to police work. Members of the Homeguard unit received specialized training in “target hardening” principals that will enable them to effectively conduct home security audits.
The Peterborough Lakefield Community Police Service would like to thank and acknowledge Martin Wormald of Trent Security Systems for sponsoring the Crime Prevention Tip Playing Cards that will be given out to residents that complete a home security audit.
