Fraud/Scam Alert Print E-mail
Wednesday, 09 June 2010

The Peterborough Lakefield Community Police Service is warning residents about a Lotto Canada Sweepstakes scam. Several residents have received letters informing them that they are the winners of a Lotto Canada Sweepstakes held on April 15, 2010. Included with the letter is a cheque in the amount of $1,260.00 with instructions to deposit the cheque and send $1,200.00 via Western Union to an International Clearing Officer at an address in Paris, France so that the winning prize in the amount of $48,000.00 can be sent to the winner. Anyone receiving one of these letters should ignore and destroy it.

Remember these tips for avoiding scam lotteries:

  1. You cannot win a legitimate lottery if you have not entered it.
  2. You must purchase a ticket to enter a legitimate lottery.
  3. NO legitimate lottery contacts winners. Winners must always contact the lottery first.
  4. You never have to pay to collect winnings from a legitimate lottery or sweepstake.
  5. Scammers often use the name of a legitimate lottery in the scam.

Peterborough Lakefield Community Police Service Drug Strategy Task Force Wins The 2010 Ontario Association of Chiefs of Police Community Policing Award:

The Ontario Association of Chiefs of Police is pleased to announce that the Peterborough Lakefield Community Police Service Drug Strategy Task Force has won the 2010 Ontario Association of Chiefs of Police Community Policing Award. This award is granted in recognition of a partnership between the police and the community they serve in identifying a specific concern and developing a successful, innovative solution to the issue.

Award winners demonstrate their commitment to a Community Policing model in their approach to solving the problem. The Peterborough Drug Strategy Task Force is based on the Peterborough Lakefield Community Police Service’s philosophy that strength stems from diverse community partnerships. Under this initiative, five geographic areas were designated where a Community Patrol Unit was assigned to promote the shared responsibility between community members and the police for the prevention and resolving crime.

Community members have access to a team member 24-hours-a-day and are encouraged to participate in community meetings intended to address immediate concerns and create prevention strategies for their unique area. In addition to the team policing strategy, the Service encourages each officer to be involved in the community by participating in initiatives, on committees, providing support for events and partnering with existing services.

The 2010 Ontario Association of Chiefs of Police Community Policing Award, sponsored by Accident Support Services International Inc., will be presented on Wednesday June 16th in Kingston during the Awards and Life Members Luncheon at the Ontario Association of Chiefs of Police Annual Conference and Global Showcase.

G20 Summit Print E-mail
Wednesday, 26 May 2010
The Peterborough Lakefield Community Police Service will be sending a contingency of 1 Sergeant and 10 Constables to Toronto for the upcoming G20 Summit.

The RCMP is the lead agency for safety and security of the G20 delegates and has requested the assistance of the Toronto Police Service and other law enforcement partners across Canada to be part of the G20 Summit integrated security plan. Peterborough officers will be deployed in Toronto during a period from June 21st to June 28th, 2010 and will be required to remain there for the duration. Leading up to the Summit deployment, officers will receive extensive training to help them deal with the potential demonstrations, protests and civil disobedience that they may be exposed to while deployed.

Although it is important to assist in this worldwide event, it is equally important that the citizens of Peterborough and Lakefield realize that the level of policing in our communities will not be affected and the cost for sending our officers will be recovered through funding from Public Safety Canada.

Due to the fact that this security detail is being headed by the RCMP no further information on the deployment of our officers will be released.

Automated Switchboard System Implemented At Police Station Print E-mail
Tuesday, 30 March 2010
The Peterborough Lakefield Police Service is implementing an Automated Switchboard System effective March 30th, 2010. This technology, which was a recommendation of the recent Organizational Review, is intended to increase internal staff efficiencies while also increasing our level of customer service.

The system menu is designed to allow callers more direct access to members they wish to speak with. In addition, the menu identifies police functions commonly required by the public so they are routed to the correct member. This change does NOT affect the 911 system, which is for reporting emergencies requiring immediate Police, Fire or Ambulance response.
