At this time of the year citizens may fall prey to over inflated and unnecessary repairs to their homes and property. The Peterborough Lakefield Community Police Service is encouraging residents to be cautious of home/property maintenance companies canvassing their neighbourhoods offering their services. We would like to encourage people to refrain from agreeing to services on impulse and recommend the following considerations:
- There rarely exists the necessity to act immediately on these offers and almost all reputable companies will allow the customer to reflect and purchase the service at a later date for the same price quote.
- Obtain comparison quotes in writing or consult with a trusted and knowledgeable third party.
- Spend a few minutes researching the company and its reputation, get references and check warranties and guarantees.
- Never pay in full until the work is complete. Ten percent of the total estimate is a fair down payment.
